Five reasons why "The Truman Show" is Postmodern

  1. The very manipulative existence of the mass media is brilliantly shown in this film. It excellently shows us that not only the protagonist is infected with simulation virus but all the viewers(in film) of  "The Truman Show"  also are infected by it. They are, like Truman, are unconscious that their reality is a simulation. If Truman is stuck in the simulation, then they are stuck in simulation of the simulation.

  2. Simulation inside the simulation. We watch how other people watch one human being live inside the perfect "reality" . This is a mise-en-abyme,  "film inside the film".

  3. This film, which is, in point of fact, a production of mass media culture, in an absolutely postmodern style, ironically, analyzes itself.  This analysis is rather universal. One also can say that by making "The Truman Show", filmmakers „are shooting themselves in the foot”.

  4. However, with all the connection of the "The Truman Show" to reality show, do not forget that, first of all, this is a story about the escape from the familiar but limited world(The Truman Show) into an unknown reality(world behind the dome), where you can win all or lose everything. This escape happened in the end of the film.

  5. "The Truman Show" is full of intertext. In the "show" every "actor" appropriated product placement, which is used in our world. They use it with same aim.
